KLANG, MALAYSIA – Damodara month is a special month in Malaysia. It spurs up every devotee to give every person they meet an opportunity to light a lamp for Lord Damodara and give them an opportunity to perish all their sins and not take birth in this material world again. To signify the start of this wonderful month, devotees in Klang set up a lovely display of a scene in Gokul. Amidst blowing of conch shells and song of Damodarastaka, a screen was removed to reveal a miniature model of a scene in Gokul. It was a sweet sight just watching this scene. It seemed like Vrindavan had just come alive. At one corner, there was baby Krishna eating his butter with broken pots all around just outside a little miniature house. In the center Lord Damodara is being tied by other Yasodha to a grinding mortar with little fawns looking at them. The other end of this model had a river running through with deers, monkeys and fawns gracing the area. The little grove above the miniature model with lush shades of green, blossoming flowers and birds added the final touch to this model.
A slideshow presentation on the different reasons why Deepavali was celebrated, was next on the agenda. The story of Narakasura being killed by Krishna as well as the return of Rama to Ayodhya after being exiled for fourteen years were narrated. And the story that captured everyone’s hearts was definitely the story of Krishna’s pastime in Gokul.
A skit followed next where some devotees enacted a scene where they preach to people in homes about the glories of Damodara month. This motivated many devotees who then signed up to take up the challenge of visiting more homes and getting people from all walks of life to light a ghee lamp to Lord Damodara. Each volunteer was given a preaching kit which comprised of a mini-altar with Srila Prabhupada, Sri Sri Gaura Nitai and Lord Damodara, a CD with a rendition of localised Vrindavan bhajan songs, a flier with info on the glories of offering a lamp during the Karttika month and how to go about doing in at home.
Finally it was time for showing the ghee lamps and what a way to start. The Guru Parampara deities were taken to the Gokul miniature model where they offered the first ghee lamps to Lord Damodara. It was a very good feeling following in the footsteps of our Guru Parampara.
“O Lord! Although You are capable of granting any boon I do not pray to You for liberation, nor for eternal life in Vaikuntha, or for any other benediction. O Lord! May Your form as a cowherd child forever remain manifest in my heart. Other than this I have no need of anything.”
