Snatched by the crow of death

We get many birds flying to our house to make their nests especially in our rooftop. We were lucky when one couple started making their nest on a fern plant near our Tulasi plant. It was very interesting watching them build their nest so patiently. They have so much intelligence Krishna had given them. They knew that a nest must be made for their babies and they knew how to make them. Their parents never even told them how to do that.

In our class, my mum said Krishna has given all living beings intelligence. The birds are one of them. They had so much patience as they brought the small twigs one by one to build the nest. And they worked so well together, both the mother and father bird. But my mum said, the highest intelligence has been given to human beings. We need to know who we are and what our relationship is to the Lord. Most importantly, we need to know how to serve the Lord.

After a few weeks the nest was ready, then one day, we saw one tiny egg with spots on it in the nest. And another egg appeared the next day. Soon we saw the birds taking turns to sit on the eggs to warm them. Again they knew exactly what to do.

Then the eggs hatched one by one and the parent birds took turns to feed them. They took a lot of effort finding food for them. Every time they brought something for their children, the little birds would open their mouth and swallow them. Even the little birds knew how to eat without anyone telling them.

One day, there was only one little bird in the nest. We didn’t know what happened. And then the next day, the other little bird also disappeared! We saw both the parents looking from a tree branch above looking so sad. Something had taken those two little birds at night. We suspect it could be the crows that had been spying on them ever since they were born.

In our class, my mum said, this is how how life is. We don’t know when death will come. Just like the lives of the little birds, we don’t know when our lives will be taken away. So we must all chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra with all our heart. The more intense we chant, the closer the Lord will be with us at the time of death. My mum said, the birds will probably become human beings in their next lives because they had been hearing us sing the Tulasi prayers near their nest everyday.

You can be sure we all chanted very intensely during that class that day.

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare

Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

  1. Hare Krsna Vinodh, I absolutely agree with you. The more we chant the more we will remember Krsna at our time of death. I am also sorry to hear that the birds were stolen in the middle of the night. I hope you won’t be too sad. You will miss them surely. But I think you already know that Krsna has other plans for them and their life as little birds was just a temporary phase in their journey of transmigration. May I share something with you. You see, we’ve got two pet cats, Kitty and Tina who roam about all day, running along the road, chasing birds and butterflies and sleeping on people’s cars or in someone’s shoes but the minute they hear the drums and cymbals are just near the pooja room, full of attention, waiting for something to happen. We truly feel within our hearts that these lovely cats are certain to take a higher life form in their next birth as in this birth they are so keen to be in the atmosphere where Krishna’s glories are sung. Hari Bol!
